24/7 AI answering service

The phone keeps working when you cannot pick it up.

LUNA's AI receptionist answers calls to Australian businesses 24/7, including nights, weekends and public holidays. It greets callers in the business name, asks the approved intake questions, and completes the next useful step: book into a connected calendar, transfer the call, send an urgent message or create a clear follow-up. Each receptionist is configured around the business's real services, service areas, hours, pricing rules and escalation boundaries. LUNA writes the call logic, connects the existing phone number, calendar and CRM, tests realistic edge cases and keeps tuning the setup after launch. Call-data providers, access, storage regions and retention settings are documented in the written scope rather than assumed. Most standard business setups take about 2 to 4 weeks, followed by a month-to-month managed service with 30 days' notice. LUNA is based in Brisbane and works with service businesses across Australia.

Call intelligence

The conversation becomes a clear next action.

The useful product is not the voice alone. It is the booking, transfer, message or follow-up that reaches your team with enough context to act.

Human handoff

Automation ends where human judgement begins.

Every build defines what Luna can complete, what must reach a person and what follows the urgent or emergency path. An unknown answer should become a clean handoff, not a confident invention.

01Routine and in scope

The receptionist completes it

It answers the approved question, captures the details, books the next step or sends the agreed follow-up.

02Needs a person

The call is handed over

The caller follows the direct or warm-transfer path to the nominated person instead of reaching a dead end.

03Urgent

The right person is alerted

The call follows the urgent routing rules. Genuine emergencies are referred to emergency services.

Done-for-you implementation

From your real calls to a tested receptionist.

A standard setup usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks. More complex booking logic, locations or custom integrations can take longer; the written scope sets that expectation before work begins.

  1. 01

    Map the calls

We review why customers call, what your team asks, which requests can be booked and which must reach a person.

  2. 02

    Write the receptionist

LUNA builds the greeting, business knowledge, approved answers, intake questions, transfer rules and after-hours behaviour.

  3. 03

    Connect the systems

Your existing number routes to the receptionist and the approved calendar, CRM and notification workflows are connected.

  4. 04

    Test the edge cases

We run realistic calls, wrong numbers, unusual requests, urgent scenarios and booking conditions before the full go-live.

  5. 05

    Tune after launch

Real call outcomes show where wording, knowledge or routing can improve. LUNA maintains the setup with you.

Australian voice options

The right voice should feel like it belongs to the business.

Listen to a small selection here. Voice choice is only one layer; phrasing, pace, business knowledge and transfer behaviour shape the full caller experience.

Every sample says the same line, so you can compare voices like for like. This is exactly what your callers would hear.

AI receptionist vs virtual receptionist

Compare who answers. Then compare what gets done.

An in-house receptionist, a human answering service and an AI receptionist can all be sensible choices. The useful distinction is coverage, capacity, next-step capability and who owns the setup.

Questions, answered

AI receptionist questions, answered

What's the difference between an AI receptionist and a virtual receptionist?
They describe the same job, answering your business calls so you don't miss them, but the term tells you who's doing the answering. "Virtual receptionist" is the broad term: any receptionist who works your phones remotely rather than at a desk in your office, whether that's a human in a call centre or AI. "AI receptionist" specifically means the calls are answered by a natural-language voice system rather than a person. The practical difference is coverage and capacity: a human virtual receptionist works to a roster and handles a limited number of calls at once. An AI receptionist can work 24/7 and handle multiple calls at the same time.
What is a virtual receptionist service?
A virtual receptionist service answers business calls from outside your workplace. It may use remote human receptionists, AI voice software or a hybrid of both. Depending on the service, it can take messages, transfer calls, qualify enquiries, book appointments and send structured outcomes to your team. Compare who answers, the hours covered, what happens during the call and who maintains the setup.
What's the difference between this and a traditional answering service?
A traditional answering service usually has human operators pick up overflow calls, take a message and email or text it to you. Coverage, booking capability and cost vary by provider. An AI answering service uses voice software instead. LUNA's AI receptionist is configured to do more of the next step during the call: qualify the enquiry, book into the connected calendar, follow your transfer rules and send a structured outcome to your team.
How much does an AI receptionist cost in Australia?
We don't publish a fixed price because a sole trader and a multi-location business need very different setups. The written quote reflects the call patterns, booking or routing logic, integrations and ongoing support your business needs. LUNA uses a flat monthly service fee after discovery rather than a public one-size-fits-all package or per-call charge.
Is an AI receptionist worth it for a small business?
It is worth comparing when phone calls regularly lead to bookings, jobs or qualified enquiries and you cannot answer every one, especially while serving customers or after hours. It may be the wrong fit if your call volume is very low or almost every conversation needs nuanced judgement from the owner. Use the missed-call calculator on this page, try the live demo and compare the likely recovered work with the custom monthly scope before deciding.
Will callers know they're talking to an AI?
The receptionist uses a natural Australian voice and responds conversationally with appropriate pauses. If someone asks directly whether it is AI, the system answers transparently. For distressed, sensitive or out-of-scope calls, it follows the transfer or escalation rules agreed with your business rather than improvising.
Can I use it only as an after-hours answering service?
Yes. One common setup is for your team to answer during business hours and for the AI to take over in the evenings, overnight, on weekends and on public holidays. Other businesses use it for overflow or as their main receptionist. LUNA configures the handover and transfer rules around your existing phone setup.
Does it work with my existing phone number?
Yes. Your current business number can be forwarded to the AI system, so callers keep using the number they already know. LUNA works with common Australian VoIP, mobile and landline providers and maps the forwarding setup during implementation.
Can it book into my existing calendar or booking system?
Yes. Common business connections include GoHighLevel, ServiceM8, Google Calendar, Microsoft 365 Outlook, Calendly, Square Appointments, Mindbody, Xero, HubSpot and Pipedrive. When a platform does not offer a direct connection, LUNA can route the workflow through an approved automation layer so the booking and caller details still land in the right place.
What happens if the AI can't answer a question?
It follows the boundary agreed during setup. It can take a message for an in-scope question that needs review, transfer an out-of-scope call to the nominated person, or use the urgent escalation path where the situation calls for it. The aim is a clear handoff, not an invented answer.
How do call transfers and escalations work?
Routine routing can use a direct transfer to the right number. A more sensitive or urgent call can use a warm handoff, where the person receiving the call is briefed before the caller is connected. If a live transfer is not required, the receptionist can capture the details and send an urgent notification to the nominated person.
Can it transfer calls to a real person?
Yes. Transfer rules can vary by reason for calling, urgency, time of day and who is on call. Genuine emergencies are referred to emergency services; calls that need a person can be transferred; and urgent matters that do not need a live handoff can be sent immediately to the right person as an urgent message.
How do you handle call data, security and privacy?
Calls can pass through telephony, voice, automation and CRM providers. Before launch, LUNA documents what is collected, who can access it, the storage regions each provider confirms, and the agreed retention, export and deletion settings. We do not describe every setup as Australian-hosted. If Australian data residency is required, it must be verified across every provider in the written scope. Regulated healthcare calls belong on LUNA's separate medical AI receptionist service, which uses additional clinical, privacy and emergency boundaries.
How quickly can it be set up, and is there a lock-in contract?
Most business setups take about 2 to 4 weeks: discovery, call mapping, script writing and voice selection, followed by testing, edge-case review and go-live. The ongoing service is month-to-month with 30 days' notice. LUNA configures the system, so no technical knowledge is needed from your team.
Does the AI handle calls across different Australian timezones?
Yes. The system is timezone-aware across Australia. Times quoted to callers can follow the business's primary timezone, and after-hours rules can respect the business's local time rather than the caller's.
Can the AI handle a rush of calls all at once?
Yes. It can handle multiple concurrent calls, so an after-hours rush or busy period does not have to become a single queue or a run of missed calls. The exact capacity and routing design are confirmed as part of the written scope.
Can I hear a demo before I commit to anything?
Yes. The live demo on this page lets you call one of 11 fictional Australian businesses for up to five minutes. You can also play the voice samples or visit the full voice selection page. The fictional businesses are demonstrations, not LUNA clients or customer proof.
Should I use a self-serve AI receptionist app or a done-for-you service?
It comes down to who owns the work after you choose a provider. A packaged app can suit a simple, repeatable call pattern and a team happy to configure and maintain it. LUNA maps your real calls, writes the scripts, connects the phone, calendar and CRM, tests the edge cases and keeps tuning the receptionist after launch. Compare the ongoing ownership as carefully as the feature list.
Can the AI make outbound calls like reminders and callbacks?
The core receptionist is built for inbound calls. Outbound reminders, callbacks and follow-up can be scoped separately where they are useful and lawful. Many routine reminders are better handled by SMS. Consent, call-conduct rules and the systems involved are reviewed before any outbound voice workflow is switched on.
